CAT, MAT, XAT, GMAT, CMAT, and NMIMS are the exams conducted in India that are a gateway to the top-most colleges in India. Following is a complete guide to these exams, everything that you should know before venturing into the world of management studies.

Full Form of CAT 

Common Admission Test (CAT) is an exam conducted by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) annually. IIMs and several other management institutions that accept the CAT scores

Eligibility is as follows:

  • Any Bachelor’s degree (50 % for Open category and 45% for SC/ST or differently abled).
  • Students pursuing the final year of their professional degree with admission subjected to proof of completion of the degree.
  • Age limit not a constraint for CAT.

The question paper for CAT is divided into 3 sections:

  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension – 34 questions 102 marks
  • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning – 32 questions for 98 marks
  • Quantitative Ability – 34 questions for 102 marks

The marking system includes 3 marks for every correct answer with a negative marking of 1 marking for every incorrect answer.

Full Form of MAT

Management Aptitude Test or MAT is conducted by the All India Management Association (AIMA). It is held four times in a year in the months of February, May, September, and December. The scores for MAT are considered in over 600 business schools in India.

Eligibility is as follows:

  • Any Bachelor’s degree (50 % for Open category and 45% for SC/ST or differently abled).
  • Students pursuing the final year of their professional degree admission subjected to proof of completion of the degree.
  • Age limit not a constraint for CAT.

The question paper for the MAT is divided into 5 sections:

  • Mathematics – 40 questions for 40 marks
  • Data Analysis – 40 questions for 40 marks
  • Language and Comprehension – 40 questions for 40 marks
  • Intelligence and Critical Reasoning – 40 questions for marks
  • Indian and Global Requirement – 40 questions for marks

For every correct answer, 1 mark is rewarded, while for every incorrect answer 1/4th mark is deducted.

Full Form of XAT 

Xavier Aptitude Test XAT is an exam conducted by Xavier School of Management (XLRI) annually. The scores if XAT are considered for admissions in over 800 business schools in India.

Eligibility is as follows:

  • Any Bachelor’s degree with a minimum duration of 3 years.
  • Final year students can apply too.

The question paper for XAT is divided into 2 parts:

  • Part I: verbal and logical ability, decision making, data interpretation and quantitative aptitude (total of 72 questions)
  • Part II: GK, essay writing (25 questions and 1 topic for essay)

For every correct answer, 1 mark is rewarded, while for every incorrect answer 1/4th mark is deducted. There is no negative marking for Part II.

Full Form of GMAT 

Graduate Management Admission (GMAT) is conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council for admissions in business schools across the world. A test score of a minimum of 200 and a maximum of 800 is required for GMAT.

Eligibility is as follows:

  • Any Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
  • 18 years + of age.
  • For candidates between 13 to 17 years, written consent from parents.

The question paper is divided into 4 sections:

  • Analytical Writing Assessment (1 topic)
  • Integrated Reasoning (12 questions)
  • Quantitative Aptitude (31 questions)
  • Verbal Aptitude (36 questions)

GMAT does not have a specific schedule for the exams. It can be conducted according to the availability of the candidate. The registration for GMAT is done from 6 months prior to the exam date until 24 hours before the exam, depending on the availability of the exam slots. The application fee is ₹ 17,000 /- approximately. 5 attempts can be made in a year and 8 attempts in a lifetime. Results are available within a few hours of the test.

Eligibility for CMAT is as follows:

  • Indian citizenship.
  • Any Bachelor’s degree with a duration of a minimum of 3 years (50 % for Open category and 45% for SC/ST).
  • Final year students are eligible.
  • No age constraint.

The question paper for CMAT is divided into 4 sections:

  • Logical Reasoning – 25 questions for 100 marks
  • Language Comprehension – 25 questions for 100 marks
  • Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation – 25 questions for 100 marks
  • General Awareness – 25 questions for 100 marks

Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies or NMIMS (NMAT) is conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council for institutes like NMIMS, ICFAI, VIT Alliance, and SRM University.

Eligibility is as follows:

  • Any Bachelor’s degree with 50 % aggregate.
  • Final year students are eligible.

The question paper is divided into 3 sections:

  • Language Skills (32 questions)
  • Quantitative Skills (48 questions)
  • Logical Reasoning (40 questions)

Every correct answer is rewarded with 1 mark. There is no negative marking.
